2. Orion
For many this came as a huge surprise over the end credits. For any not in the know, a majorly integral part of Metallica's early work was their messianic, classical-music-loving bassist Cliff Burton. Sadly Cliff was taken from us back in 1986, but not before he had recorded the instrumental masterpiece Orion. With it's slow rumbling intro that develops into a progressive composition comprised of duelling bass and guitar solos, it has everything the greatest metal songs are made of, perfectly packed into it's 8:22 runtime. Needless to say with early Metallica being four best friends, Cliff being taken away was a blow that some think the band have still never recovered from, and perhaps because of this, Orion is scarcely played live in it's full original form with all those signature basslines intact. Until now that is, when the band sit in a now-empty arena and fire through the 27 year-old track, comfortably immortalising Cliff's greatest work in the unique time capsule that is the medium of film. It's a beautiful moment for fans, and a showcase of why Metallica are still regarded as legends for everyone else.
