4. We Still Havent Forgotten About The Shailene Woodley/Mary Jane Fiasco

Last summer, some production images showing actress Shailene Woodley interacting with Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone were released confirming that Mary Jane Watson, the future Mrs. Parker (in the comic book world, at least), was going to be a character in the The Amazing Spider-Man 2. The air was quickly let out of that balloon when some fans trolled various comic book blogs and forums and sparked a controversy by claiming Woodley wasnt hot enough to portray MJ. Rather than use this piggish behavior as a teachable moment about our perception of beauty, a few weeks later, director Marc Webb announced that Woodley/MJ had been cut from the movie. Webb claimed that he loved Woodleys performance, but that the presence of MJ would take way from the movies more pronounced focus on the Peter/Gwen Stacy romance. Fair enough, but for a film that already has four villains, and is teasing the presence of others, how would a few minutes of Mary Jane really affect the final product, especially since the announcement of Woodleys removal was so curiously timed after the initial fan backlash about her looks?
