10 Reasons You're Wrong About Avatar
1. Home Viewings Will Never Do It Full Justice
Watching Avatar today at home, it's aged exceptionally well in a way few films with this much CGI manage to.
The expressiveness of the characters and the jelly in their eyes looks tangible, allowing the film to effortlessly leap over the uncanny valley, while water effects and other complex particle work still looks mind-bogglingly good.
And yet, some will insist that the film hasn't stood the test of time and simply feels "flat" when watched today. What they're forgetting, of course, is that not even the most sophisticated home cinema system can replicate the majesty of the theatrical 3D experience, all the more so if you saw it in IMAX.
The film was designed with big-screen 3D exhibition in mind, and so Cameron's slick motions and perspective tricks naturally lack the same impact viewed in 2D on a 50-inch TV at home. While nobody's saying this fully hand-waives the complaints, it's nevertheless an important piece of context that shouldn't be ignored.
Thankfully Cameron will almost certainly re-release Avatar in cinemas before the first sequel comes out, so if you were left a tad deflated after re-visiting the movie on Blu-ray, you'll probably be able to re-experience the epic the way it was meant to be seen soon enough.
