10 Scariest Movies You Can Watch FOR FREE On YouTube Right Now
1. Funny Games (1997)
Michael Haneke's 1997 psychological horror Funny Games is a completely different type of film compared to all the others on this list, because there aren't any supernatural beasties or ghosts haunting the protagonists.
Instead, Haneke's film - which he also remade shot-for-shot in 2007 - is a seemingly simple home invasion story, focused on a wealthy couple and their son who find themselves attacked and taken hostage by a pair of young men.
Haneke's film may sound conventional, but the sadistic conceit is that Funny Games basically functions as an anti-cinematic satire of conventional Hollywood thrillers, with a soundtrack led by a discordant title track from experimental thrash metal band Naked City.
There are a number of subtle meta flourishes during the film which point to the assailants being aware they're in a film, as comes to a head in decidedly less-subtle fashion later on when one of them literally grabs a remote control to rewind the movie and reverse an undesirable outcome.
It completely flies in the face of the expected genre typicality, and so it's little surprise that the film proved hugely divisive with audiences and critics, many of whom felt that Haneke was judging them for seeking entertainment in a hostage thriller.
That's not to ignore the film's almost comically bleak ending, which once again seems primed to leave audiences dissatisfied and questioning their own "complicity" in what they've seen.
It is nevertheless a provocative and deeply unsettling film in its own right - a truly horrifying examination of the banality of evil.
