10 Surprisingly Great Movies From Summer 2016
2. Star Trek Beyond
What We Expected: Director J.J. Abrams being replaced by Fast and Furious' Justin Lin suggests Beyond will deliver the requisite action but probably at the expense of basic logic. Plus, Simon Pegg is a fairly inconsistent screenwriter and has never written a movie of this scope and magnitude before, so it could easily be a bit of a mess.
What We Got: A surprisingly satisfying romp that basically plays out like an extended episode of the 1960s TV show. Pegg's script warmly embraces an old-school tone that plays-up the fun and downplays the gritty seriousness, while avoiding ham-fisted references to classic Trek (a major issue in Star Trek Into Darkness), giving both Leonard Nimoy and Anton Yelchin touching tributes, and introducing a terrific new heroine by way of Sofia Boutella's Jaylah.
