3. The Fool "Kills" Paxton - Tarot
2024 may have been a brilliant year for horror, but the trade-off is that we got low-effort slop like Tarot, which plumbed the creative depths to make a horror flick out of tarot cards. Yawn.
But to be completely fair to the movie, it did offer up one memorably nerve-jangling scene, when Paxton (Jacob Batalon) is terrorised by the very tarot card he was presented with at the start of the film - The Fool.
When walking home one night, Paxton is pursued by The Fool, who Paxton locks eyes with across the street.
He soon enough runs for the safety of his dorm building, taking the elevator up to his floor, but when it opens, The Fool can be seen waiting for him on the other end of a very dark hallway.
A terrified Paxton watches as The Fool creepily twitches and contorts its way towards him, while preventing him from taking the elevator to another floor.
The Fool continues to taunt Paxton, goofing around and pulling creepy facial expressions, until it finally crashes through the ceiling of the elevator and apparently kills him.
It's a genuinely inventive and unnerving scene, albeit one that's undone slightly when the end of the film reveals that Paxton inexplicably survived. Boo.
