10 Terrifying Horror Movies You’ve Probably Never Seen
1. Lake Mungo (2008)
While we normally associate the mockumentary genre with satire, it has often been used to great effect in horror, whether in found footage classics like The Blair Witch Project (1999) and Paranormal Activity (2007), or full investigative procedurals such as The Poughkeepsie Tapes (2007) and this final pick, Lake Mungo.
Lake Mungo tells the story of how 16-year-old Alice Palmer (Talia Zucker) mysteriously drowned while swimming with her family. In trying to come to terms with her death, the Palmers bring in a psychic, set up some cameras, and inadvertently discover the secrets of Alice's life. But that's not all -- as they dig down into the events approaching Alice's final days, they discover certain unexplainable horrors, and an Alice-shaped presence in their home that has not passed on.
Ratcheting up the tension throughout, the film employs talking head interviews and intensely creepy, low-res home video, intercut with mesmerising cinematography that makes extensive use of natural light and time-lapse photography. If these elements seem at odds on paper, they meld the movie's themes perfectly in practice, setting the visual environment for a feature that is at once terrifying and deeply tragic.
