Some of the best horror movies have been made on a shoestring budget, with a lack of funds often forcing filmmakers to get creative when it comes to cranking up the scares.

That’s certainly the case with director Rob Green and The Bunker. It’s a simple enough premise but one delivered in an effectively atmospheric way.

It centres on a group of battle-weary German soldiers who, while retreating through the forests of the Ardennes take refuge in an isolated Siegfried Line bunker.

Already contemplating surrender, the soldiers find their situation further complicated after learning the bunker was built of the site of a massacre that took place during the Black Plague.

Evil spirits lurk deep within the bowels of their new refuge and it’s not long before the men begin disappearing one by one.

While Green succeeds in drenching every frame of the film in a sense of lurking dread, he’s aided by a game cast populated by British actors from the stage and screen.

Standouts include Lock, Stock & Two Smoking Barrels star Jason Flemying as well as Ray Donovan’s Eddie Marsan and the ever-reliable Jack Davenport, best remembered for his role in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise.
