10 Theories How Wolverine Can Fit Into X-Men: Apocalypse

8. He Didn't Escape Weapon X In This Timeline

The insinuation in the "You've been busy"/"We had a little help" exchange is that Wolverine's appearance is a shock to Jean and Scott as much as it would have been to audiences if it hadn't been in the trailer, heavily suggesting that he's a prisoner in Alkali Lake.

Which is all very plain and obvious, right? Well, yeah, but it's also a pretty massive plot clue; unless he has just been created, he didn't escape during the adamantium injection like in the original timeline and has instead been kept for further experimentation. This allows Apocalypse to detail the escape, only this time instigated by the presence of other X-Men, something that will allow Logan to get wrapped up in the merry mutants adventures earlier in the timeline (assuming Hugh Jackman doesn't call it quits after Wolverine 3).

How much that reflects a change in character by the events of Days Of Future Past is up to the writers, but it does help distinguish this new canon from the old.
