10 Things That The Batman Gets Absolutely Right
3. Showing Batman As A Detective
The reactions to the marketing of this film in relation to Batman being the world’s greatest detective were…mixed.
Lots of people didn’t want to get on board with the idea of Robert Pattinson going about being Sherlock Holmes in a dark suit for three hours, and that’s fair enough. Luckily for these people, that’s not what the movie is.
It manages to strike a balance between the promises of the overzealous marketing and the understatement of previous films. It can be frustrating to see there be no investigative element (as we have seen before) but obviously they didn’t want to shoot too far the other way and have it become like Law and Order: Gotham Edition.
After Riddler’s first killing, Batman analyses the scene alongside the police, and it’s here that we get to see the film’s approach to its noir detective Batman. The pacing works and the investigative element drives the plot forward without making it feel stilted, and realistically being a problem-solver and a puzzle-buster is all part of being the hero Batman is.
