Release Date: August 15, 2014 The first Expendables movie was an interesting experiment that paid off - what if we got all the Hollywood action stars into one self-aware movie and celebrated their careers in a movie filled with explosions and people's necks breaking? What could have been terrible emerged a surprise success, and with Sylvester Stallone at the helm - an underrated director, in all actuality - the movie made a killing at the box office. And here we are, several years later, gearing up for what will be the third Expendables movie. Seriously now: has this joke not officially run its course? Which is to say: the second Expendables movie was sure fire proof that the idea was really only worthy of a single venture. Refusing to say die, though (much like the heroes he's spent a career playing), Stallone took the critical failure of The Expendables as a sign to... keep on going? So now we're looking at a bombastic third installment featuring the likes of Wesley Snipes, Antonio Banderas, Mel Gibson, Harrison Ford, Kelsey Grammer, alongside old favourites like, you know, Jason Statham, Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Stallone himself. Given the lackluster nature of the middle chapter, then, it's super hard to get pumped for a third take on "the old guys doing action stuff" theme - almost to the point where the joke seems to be on Stallone now, a relic who can't let go and move on to other things.
