10 Ways Deadpool 2 Is Actually A Huge Disappointment
1. It Never Finds A Balance
Most importantly, the film is just unable to ever find a balance. In the first film, Miller was able to toe-the-line when it came to mixing the heart and the humor. Using its non-linear structure, the film was able to jump more effectively between the ridiculous and over-the-top tone of in-suit Deadpool and anchor the heart of it with pre-suit Wade Wilson in flashbacks.
So a sequel was always going to have its work cut out for it, in terms of finding a new solution to the question of how to balance the wildly different tones. Sadly, Deadpool 2 has no answer for this. The film is constantly jarringly shifting gears between striving for heartfelt sincerity and raunchy comedy.
The biggest victim of this weakness is the film's overall theme. Set up early on while Vanessa is still alive, Deadpool 2 is trying to be a film about family and, more specifically, children. But the film never comes close to earning it.
It makes some valiant attempts, in the form of Cable's motivations, Deadpool's evolving relationship with authority figures, and Russell's role. But when all of this is done alongside the twenty-third dick joke of the film, these strides aren't enough to help the film stick the landing.
