10 Worst PG-13 Horror Films Since 2020

9. Umma

Fantasy Island Movie
Sony Pictures Releasing

Sandra Oh seems like an absolutely top tier human and, for the most part, her body of work is very impressive. However, nobody bats a thousand, and one of Oh’s worst ever stinkers came out in 2022.

Umma - a Korean word meaning “mother” - is about Oh’s character Amanda and two key relationships in her life; one with her daughter and one with her recently deceased mum. Thinking she is finally free of her controlling hand, Amanda is in for the shock of her life when Umma’s spirit returns to haunt her family farm.

There’s some really nice ideas about generational trauma and the role of women in the family that this film tries to get across, but, sadly, they never materialise properly. The premise is certainly interesting, but nothing else about Umma is, as it follows the formula of so many haunted house stories that have come before.

Critics and viewers alike were let down by the final project, so maybe this is a case of something being disappointing rather than bad, but there’s no way to watch Umma without feeling shortchanged.
