5. The Ending - Dunkirk

Dunkirk Tom Hardy
Warner Bros.

Christopher Nolan's ferociously intense war film concludes with the completion of the Dunkirk evacuation, depicted from the three triangulating perspectives of land, sea and air.

Commander Bolton (Kenneth Branagh) sees the last British soldiers leave and stays behind for the next evacuation, while young soldiers Tommy (Fionn Whitehead) and Alex (Harry Styles) ride the train and wonder what awaits them back home before being warmly received, Farrier's (Tom Hardy) plane runs out of fuel and he's captured by the Germans, and young George (Barry Keoghan) is posthumously commended in the local newspaper.

Nolan once again proves himself a master of the emotionally swelling montage, with the visual of Farrier's plane on fire proving especially haunting, in what's nothing if not a fittingly gorgeous end to the director's superbly-assembled epic.
