5. Flatliners
To be honest, nobody seems quite sure what the new Flatliners actually is. First promoted as a remake, Kiefer Sutherland, who is set to reprise his role as Nelson Wright from the original film, then recently stated it would be more of a sequel. Without official confirmation many outlets are referring to it as a ‘legacy-quel’ – a new term being bandied around that refers to a kind of revival movie featuring familiar actors reprising classic roles, but that essentially focuses on a new generation of younger cast members.
Whatever Flatliners turns out to be, the current plot synopsis – a group of medical students induce near-death experiences to test the theory of life after death – sounds too suspiciously close to the original as yet to be a true sequel.
The group of medical students from the original – which alongside Sutherland featured Julia Roberts, Kevin Bacon, William Baldwin, and Oliver Platt – will be replaced by fresh blood including Ellen Page, Nina Dobrev, and Rogue One star Diego Luna, and with original Girl with the Dragon Tattoo director Niels Arden Oplev on board, the remake/sequel/legacy-quel could just breathe new life into a largely forgotten film.
