11 Most Disappointing Movies From Summer 2017
7. The Mummy
The Buzz: Rebooting the beloved Brendan Fraser blockbuster franchise was always going to be tough, but attaching Tom Cruise to it was certainly a good way to get people interested, considering his generally strong track record at picking worthy projects and insane commitment to just about anything he works on.
Plus, the trailers revealed a rather tantalising twist, that Cruise is bestowed with supernatural abilities following the first-act plane crash. At least it's different, right?
What We Got: A blockbuster about as generic and forgettable as they come. Cruise was totally miscast as the douchebag lead, Annabelle Wallis was an atrocious love interest, Alex Kurtzman's flaccid direction stank up the joint and the script was just trying oh-so-desperately to build a cinematic universe that nobody cared about.
Sofia Boutella was decent as the titular antagonist, but she was thoroughly wasted on this movie, and the Cruise twist was ultimately more comical than genuinely entertaining.
