The Ghostbusters franchise should have been untouchable.

Ghostbusters and Ghostbusters II are '80s classics that have remained well-loved by fans since their release, and a planned sequel had been on the cards ever since, although it never came to fruition.

After the death of Harold Ramis in 2014, Sony decided to give the series a reboot with an all-female central cast.

So far, so good. Except, no, it really wasn't.

Ghostbusters' trailer instantly polarised the fanbase, with some claiming that the decision to give the movie a female cast was nothing more than a gimmick, while some were simply glad to finally be getting the new installment that they'd been waiting for since 1989.

Starring Melissa McCarthy and Kristen Wiig with Chris Hemsworth as the Ghostbusters' receptionist, it seemed at first to be promising, even if it would be impossible to live up to the original.

It proved to be mediocre, unexciting and barely funny, and plans to give the movie a sequel were dropped, before it was announced that the series will instead continue with a direct sequel to Ghostbusters II.
