12 Best Performances In 2017 Films (So Far)

9. Gal Gadot – Wonder Woman

Split James McAvoy The Beast
Warner Bros.

The brief glimpse we got of Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman in Batman v Superman last year was the high point in an otherwise disappointing movie, but a solo film with Gadot as the main focus is a different beast entirely. And considering the quality of female-fronted superhero movies of yore (Catwoman and Elektra spring to mind), Wonder Woman wasn’t exactly a sure bet.

Thankfully Gadot nailed it giving a charismatic performance that’s at once both fierce but compassionate and innocent but not entirely naïve and, under the direction of Patty Jenkins, gives us quite possibly one of the best origin stories we’ve seen in a long time.

Above all, Gadot’s Wonder Woman is one of the good guys (or gals, pun intended) and her portrayal harks back to the uncomplicated, wholesome heroism of Christopher Reeves’ rendition of Superman - a breath of fresh air in the era of gritty superheroes with dark pasts and deep-rooted issues.
