Box Office: $99.5 million

Now in fairness, this one's a slight cheat because it didn't quite meet the 2x budget multiplier, but considering that almost every prominent box office analyst pegged this historical adventure film to sink like a stone at the box office, it's incredible that it achieved a 1.95x multiplier.

After having its release delayed numerous times, Alpha was finally dumped in cinemas over the summer with minimal advertising, and given the lack of name actors involved, it seemed destined to flop.

But miraculously, the tried-and-tested appeal of canines on film allowed Alpha to perform above expectations, and thanks to strong performances in China ($16.6 million), Russia ($8.9 million), Spain ($5.6 million) and Mexico ($5.5 million), it was pretty much nudged out of the bomb zone. Close enough, anyway.
