12 Near-Miss Castings That Almost Improved The Marvel Cinematic Universe

9. Alice Eve As Maria Hill - The Avengers

Cobie Smulders has been okay, if not overwhelmingly great, in the role of S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Maria Hill in the Marvel Cinematic Universe - but it's very hard to look at her as an all-action kick-ass femme fatale. She will always be How I Met Your Mother's Robin Scherbatsky. Smulders got the job because Joss Whedon knew her and had considered her as his potential Wonder Woman, had he directed that film, as was once expected. Someone else who could have landed the role that it would have been more natural to see in it would have been Alice Eve. Rumours were rife that she was close to landing a part in the build-up to Avengers and, although the character in question wasn't named, it was widely believed to be Hill. Eve has starred in films like Men in Black 3 and Star Trek Into Darkness, so she would have been more familiar to see in an action environment.
