Tim Burtons Alice In Wonderland was a remarkably joyless adventure that reimagined Wonderland as a place nobody - child or otherwise - would ever wish to have an adventure in. A long time ago Burton was lauded for the imagination and creativity he showed in his work; now he only ever remakes classic stories featuring Helena Bonham Carter and Johnny Depp in white face make-up, and throwing on a recycled Danny Elfman score to complete the effect. That aside Alice In Wonderland did big money and now a Tim Burton free sequel is inbound. Through The Looking Glass might struggle a lot more than the original did; Burton is gone, tolerance for Johnny Depps mugging has gone way down since 2010 and it feels like too much time has passed to really take advantage of the success of Wonderland. One bright spark is that Through The Looking Glass is being helmed by James Bobin, director of The Muppets and Flight Of The Concords, so maybe the second movie will contain some of the heart that was lacking from the original.
