8. Hot Topic’s Suicide Squad #RelationshipGoals Accessories
Since Harley Quinn’s first appearance in Batman: The Animated
Series, her dysfunctional relationship with the Joker has always been controversial
and problematic. Their romance (if you could call it that) in last year’s
Suicide Squad was no different.
Nevertheless, Hot Topic – an American emo-goth clothing chain marketed towards totally alternative teens – saw fit to sell a Suicide Squad themed bracelet featuring Harley Quinn and the Joker drawn as cutesy chibi-style cartoons and captioned with the hashtag ‘#RELATIONSHIPGOALS’.
It seems that according to Hot Topic a relationship in which a person is subjected to electroshock therapy, encouraged to jump into a vat of acid and left to drown in a sinking car is something to be admired, romanticised and marketed to young, impressionable consumers.
