Box Office: $1.066 billion.

The second Pirates of the Caribbean movie, Dead Man's Chest, remains the highest grossing of the five films, arriving three years after the 2003 original when fans were starving for more of Johnny Depp's Oscar-nominated shenanigans.

It was a solid sequel and certainly one of the better entries into the franchise, even if it was effectively just a transparent retread of everything people loved the first time around.

Still, it's a textbook example of a down-the-line blockbuster film tailor-made to appeal to an extremely wide spectrum of audiences. Compare this to Black Panther, which focuses on an MCU character featured sparingly in just one prior movie, and if we're being cynical, the mostly all-black cast would surely keep those racist box office bucks at home, right?

What a relief it was to be wrong. Audiences turned up in numbers few could've expected, and even the Johnny Depp money-printing machine that is Pirates couldn't keep up with T'Challa.
