13 Most Controversial Movie Moments Of 2017
7. The Peach Scene - Call Me By Your Name
The Moment: On one lazy summer's day, young Elio (Timothée Chalamet) gets bored and decides to masturbate using a peach he just picked from his orchard, before falling asleep and leaving the semen-filled fruit on the desk.
Later, his lover Oliver (Armie Hammer) joins him and discovers what he's done to the peach. Oliver eventually teases Elio by pretending to eat the fruit, but aside from taking a quick taste with his finger, he actually doesn't.
Why It's Controversial: While you can argue that this was a fairly bizarre sequence in an otherwise restrained and tasteful film, it left fans of André Aciman's novel irritated that the moment had been fundamentally altered, even "neutered", from the source material.
In the book, Oliver does indeed eat the entire soiled fruit with a certain emphatic relish, and fans have argued that by not fully committing to Aciman's original vision, the cinematic version of this scene was disappointingly timid.
This is in a film that's already been controversial with some members of the gay community for its lack of explicit on-screen sex. To his credit, director Luca Guadagnino did defend his alterations to the peach scene, stating that filming it as written would risk looking "involuntarily ridiculous."
