Qui-Gon's legacy as one of Star Wars' most powerful characters may be slightly undermined by him being killed by Darth Maul at the end of The Phantom Menace, yet this is preceded by not only his reputation as a grand Jedi Master, but of course, his being the mentor to Obi-Wan Kenobi.

Qui-Gon had an incredibly nuanced understanding of the Force far in excess of most of his peers, and it's as much his intelligence as his physical ability that made him one of the galaxy's most powerful characters.

His staunch study of the Living Force and philosophical devotion to living in the moment gave him a unique engagement with the Force and allowed him to single out Anakin as the Chosen One. His being so instrumental in one of the galaxy's most important events makes him an undeniably important and powerful figure, even in death.

Furthermore, Qui-Gon was the first-known Jedi to learn the secret of becoming a Force ghost, even if he didn't fully master it. This earns him a very special designation as a trail-blazing member of the Jedi Order, and ultimately had a tremendous effect on numerous other crucial Star Wars characters, not to mention the fate of the galaxy itself.
