15 Best 2016 Horrors To Watch This Halloween
4. Don't Breathe
The Film
A wonderful morality tale about what happens when you break into people's houses and steal their stuff. Also, a morality tale about the value of never f*cking with Stephen Lang.
Why Watch It?
Because it's great, mostly.
This is clearly also the year of sensory deprivation horrors with Hush also out, though this time it's the "baddie" and not the "victim" who has lost a sense, which completely re-invents the stalker genre in a way that is both satisfying and intelligent.
This is your traditional "nobody is good" horror, with the victims deservedly victimised due to their criminal activity and the stalker revealed to be an unhinged monster with a woman trapped in his basement. Cleverly though, it's all shades of grey: Rocky is a bad girl trying to escape her abusive life, and The Blind Man was warped by the death of his daughter: none of what either do is entirely forgivable, but equally it makes everything more interesting.
It's not hugely scary, but Don't Breathe certainly has its moments and it does have an over-riding creepiness. And the fact that critics all fell in love for it is a strong indication of how much you need to see it. It's not very often they say anything nice about horrors, after all.
