13. Universal Picks Up Rights To Anne Rice's Vampire Chronicles
The vampire craze in Hollywood may have hit its peak, but that hasn't stopped Universal from acquiring the rights to Anne Rice's beloved book series Vampire Chronicles. There have already been two adaptations of Anne Rice's novels, 1994's Interview with a Vampire and 2002's Queen of the Damned, but enough time has passed now for Hollywood to give the series a reboot. Universal now owns the rights to all 13 of Rice's books, and have already put a creative team in place to usher in the new adaptations. Brian Grazer will produce under his and Ron Howard's Imagine Entertainment banner, with Alex Kurtzman, Roberto Orci, and Bobby Cohen (Now You See Me) signed on as executive producers. Kurtzman and Cohen have, of course, been brought on by Universal to shepherd their shared Universal Monsters cinematic franchise, which begins in 2016 with The Mummy (which Kurtzman will direct). Despite the Vampire Chronicles fitting in quite nicely with the tone and aesthetic of the Universal Monsters, the two franchises won't share any sort of continuity. Which, quite honestly, is probably a good thing.
