15 Greatest Opening Credit Sequences In Movies

9. Blade Runner

Blade Runner's opening, much like Alien's, is a sequence of simplicity and minimalism. With its refined and simple technique, the atmosphere is palpable and the entire sequence is evocative and enthralling.

As the names show themselves across the screen, a chilling score rises to guide them along, demanding you never look away. Afterwards, the screen changes to text given you much needed exposition about Nexus, the Replicants and the idea that you're about to be transported to a world unlike your own.

The sci-fi feel is strong from the start, as is the darkness of the tone of the movie. After the text has vanished, the camera pans to a futuristic imagining of Los Angeles, spewing fire and covered in lights below the dark sky. Focus then shifts to an eye - just one eye, close-up, overlooking the fire and the entire city.

It's a pretty mundane opening on paper, but the beauty and colours makes the whole thing very entrancing, and a perfect example of how to set a scene.
