4. Mandy

Why Halloween Just Killed Up At The Box OfficeThumb
XYZ Films

Rotten Tomatoes Score: 92% (7.7/10)

Much like Climax, Mandy certainly isn't for all tastes, but if you can appreciate slow-burn surrealism shot through an impossibly neon-tinged prism, it might be the film for you.

Nicolas Cage channels his signature insanity into one of his finest performances in years as Red, a man desperate to mete bloody vengeance out on a drugged-up biker cult which invades his idyllic homestead.

While the first hour is arguably a little too sedate for its own good, the second half sure proves worth the wait, as Cage lets loose with one of the year's most uncompromising and ambitious feats of acting.

Balanced precariously between considered "art-house" fare and card-carrying schlock, Mandy is methodical, beautiful, bloody, and best of all, absolutely f***ing insane.

It also features a wonderfully trippy musical score from the late, great Jóhann Jóhannsson, which is honestly worth the price of admission alone.
