1. Tangled (2010)
The most expensive animated film of all time (costing a staggering $260 million), it pays off with stunning visuals from beginning to end. Some of it is subtle, such as the way Rapunzel's hair is animated, or in the way water is rendered... while this may not sound like much, it presents an impressive leap forward in the field of added realism to animated films. Most memorable, however, is of course the lantern scene. As the hero of the film (Flynn) rows a boat towards the castle where Rapunzel was born, thousands of lanterns are let fly in the night. Some drift high above, while some float downwards towards them, until everywhere they look they are surrounded by lanterns. Of course, there are many many more films with amazing visuals, both in an obvious and eye-grabbing way, but also in more subtle forms, and sadly we cannot pay homage to all those within the amount of space here.
