15 Things Horror Remakes Did Better Than The Original

10. The Ring - The Protagonist

Nightmare On Elm Street Remake
DreamWorks

This American remake of the Japanese horror masterpiece Ring is pretty terrible (ignore the inexplicably generous reviews) and worse still, it launched a wave of terrible horror remakes in the noughties, many of which remade either Asian horror movies or slasher flicks. This, combined with two ghastly sequels, ensures that this movie has an awful legacy,

Still, it did surpass the mostly brilliant original film in one area and that's in its protagonist. The original film's protagonist is Reiko Asakawa (Nanako Matsushima) and although Matsushima is very good as Reiko, the character is somewhat underwritten and she doesn't always seem very bothered about the tragic events occurring around her.

In contrast, Rachel Keller (Naomi Watts) is a more engaging, human and compelling lead who's well-played by Naomi Watts, so she is a better main character than Reiko was.

The Ring fails in successfully translating every single other character from the original, especially when it replaces Ring's compelling male lead (Hiroyuki Sanada) with a boring and annoying sidekick (Martin Henderson), but at least it got the lead right.
