By far the most anticipated film of the year, Spider-Man: No Way Home (which was thankfully only delayed by a few months rather than a year) was by no means a guaranteed success.

The first trailer wasn't that promising and it looked like it could easily just be a nostalgia-fest, while the run of disappointing MCU films recently (including Far From Home, this film's predecessor) made it harder still to be hopeful.

But thankfully, No Way Home didn't just live up to the hype, it exceeded it and triumphed as an all-around great movie that proved nearly every pre-release worry to be unfounded.

No Way Home is not only a showcase in how to do a nostalgia-fest, since it contains some of the best and most well-judged fan service you'll ever see in a film, but it's also a showcase in how to make a great superhero film.

It brilliantly mixes awe-inspiring action scenes with a seriously moving and heartfelt storyline that comes together exceptionally well, while the performances, villains, surprise cameos, twists and credits scenes are all absolutely top notch.

It's not perfect (Jon Watts' direction is pretty messy, for example) but it's an exemplary superhero film overall and one of the best examples of that genre this century. It's hard to imagine anyone arguing this wasn't worth waiting for.
