20 90s Movie Scenes That Traumatized Us All

Event Horizon was critically dismissed at the time... for some stupid reason. No, it's a jolly good sci-fi horror that's deservedly been re-evaluated over the years, and perhaps its greatest strength is its mastery of gore.

'Gory' can be a bit of a dirty word in horror circles, with far too many flicks (especially around this time) relying on that over atmosphere or suspense. Event Horizon is a showcase in bloody violence done properly, with it being one of those rare horror movies where gore is actually scary. 

The many images we see in Event Horizon are already horrific: an eyeless corpse, hallucinations of loved ones the crew members have lost, Jason Isaacs being vivisected alive, and, of course, the video log that shows a ship's crewmates gruesomely dismembering each other. If those clips had been longer, Event Horizon would've been rated NC-17; the snippets that we get were traumatizing enough, though, with those sickening gore effects being second-to-none.

What takes this all to the next level is the psychological terror at play, with these grisly acts serving as a visceral representation of the crew descending into madness. So, when protagonist Dr. Weir (the late, great Sam Neill) gouges out his own eyes, it shows his loss of control and his switch from hero to villain. Madness is always a frightening concept, but few other films have depicted it in quite such a gnarly way.
