20 Best Movie Blu-Rays Of 2016
14. The Revenant
The film that finally won Leonardo DiCaprio his long-awaited
Oscar arrived on Blu-ray in April and, you’ll be glad to hear, The Revenant
looks just as bleakly beautiful on the small screen as it did on the big
screen. The semi-autobiographical movie stars Leo as 19th century
frontiersman and fur trapper Hugh Glass and follows him on a quest to exact
revenge after being left for dead by his fellow trappers following a bear
mauling. Yes, the movie features Leo fighting a bear (not a real one,
thankfully). It also features him eating (real) raw bison liver, which makes that
Oscar win all the more deserved.
A behind the scenes documentary titled ‘A World Unseen’ included on the Blu-ray offers further insight into the making of the movie. Featuring interviews with its cast and director Alejandro González Iñárritu, the documentary details the experience of filming in remote regions of locations as far flung as Canada and Argentina, but also delves into the deeper themes of The Revenant including man’s place in nature, the clash of cultures between Native Americans and European immigrants and environmental responsibility.
