12. The Thing Collector’s Edition

The Thing Blu-ray
Universal Pictures

John Carpenter’s sci-fi horror The Thing might’ve been lambasted by critics when it was first released back in 1982, but thankfully it’s since been recognised for the master stroke that it really is. Today a cult classic, The Thing also achieved an oh-so rare cinematic feat – being a remake that is actually far superior to the original. Luckily for fans of classic horror, Shout! Factory released a definitive collector’s edition Blu-ray of The Thing this year.

In addition to plenty of bonus goodies already included on previous Blu-ray releases like behind-the-scenes footage and outtakes, the two-disc new release features a range of new extras too. Two brand-new audio commentaries (one led by director of photography Dean Cundey and one with co-producer Stuart Cohen) are included plus a segment featuring interviews with the film’s visual effects, make-up effects and stop motion animation departments and a gallery of illustrated storyboards by acclaimed comic book artist Mike Ploog.
