11. It - Hiya Georgie!

It Georgie Death
Warner Bros.

Director Andy Muschietti was faced with quite the task in his re-adaptation of Stephen King’s horror novel It. As cheesy and brimming with B-movie acting as the original 1990 miniseries adaptation was, if you watched it as a kid back then it’s likely you got the living daylights scared out of you thanks to Tim Curry’s menacing turn as Pennywise the clown especially in the infamous storm drain scene.

In Muschietti’s It we already know exactly what’s coming in this scene – the horrifying dismemberment of young Georgie Denbrough – but by upping the gore ante and tension considerably, he made the scene his own. You see, in It (1990) all we see is Georgie scream as Pennywise grabs his arm and bares his gnarly teeth before the scene cuts to the next.

But in It (2017) we see Pennywise – now played by the brilliantly terrifying Bill Skarsgård – actually chomp down on Georgie’s arm. We see a helpless Georgie, clearly missing one arm, try to crawl away as a pool of blood spreads around him before Pennywise drags him into the storm drain to certain death.

Muschietti turns the movie’s most expected death into its most shocking scene and sets the all-new It apart from its predecessor while immediately proving it’s a horror worthy of its R-rating. It’s graphic, gory and harrowing and exactly what a standout horror scene should be.
