10. The Shape Of Water – Song & Dance Number

The Shape Of Water Sally Hawkins
Fox Searchlight

Guillermo del Toro’s latest fairy tale is part homage to B-movie monsters of yore and part improbable love story starring Sally Hawkins as Elisa Esposito – a lonely, deaf janitor who falls in love with the humanoid fish-man (Doug Jones) that’s being retained and cruelly experimented on at the shady government facility she works at.

As weird as it may sound The Shape of Water is really just a love story at heart despite the differences in species and regardless of the fact that the scene most people are fixated on is its fish on human sex scene which, yes, does happen and isn’t half as depraved as it sounds.

A far more touching moment comes later in the film when Elisa daydreams in stylish black and white that she and Fish-Man are performing a song and dance number on glittering stage in a scene that looks like it’s ripped straight from an old Hollywood musical.

It’s a scene that comes completely out of nowhere and departs dreamily from the film’s narrative but in a fairy tale as strangely beautiful as The Shape of Water it works.

Helen Jones hasn't written a bio just yet, but if they had... it would appear here.
