6. The Midwich Cuckoos - Village of the Damned (1960)
A strange thing happens in the village of Midwich - everyone falls unconscious and whenever they awake, they find that all the women of the village are pregnant. The children are all born on the same day and they grow very quickly - when they are three years old, they are developmentally years ahead of their actual age. The 'cuckoos' all have very blonde hair, pale skin and glowing eyes. They are telepathic - whenever one of them learns something - they all learn it by proxy. The cuckoos are very well spoken and dressed and speak politely and with an intelligence beyond their years. But their lack of emotion and love repels the villagers and they strongly suspect that the cuckoos are responsible for the deaths of several people. A man named Gordon whose son David is a cuckoo, tries to reason with them and his attempts lead to a bomb going off. But we can see the cuckoos' eyes glowing through the wreckage... The Midwich cuckoos are a creepy little bunch and the worst thing is, you have no choice in having one of them as your kids - they are thrust upon you by God knows what supernatural means. Apparently the British censor found the childrens' glowing eyes to be too disturbing and censored them on the basis that they were 'horrific'. In fact everything about the cuckoos is horrific and I really think they personify the word 'creepy' in this list.
