20 Horror Monsters That Were Scarier Before You Saw Them

6. The Darkseekers - I Am Legend

I Am Legend
Warner Bros.

I Am Legend perfectly exemplifies the mantra that "less is more". The 2007 adaptation of Richard Matheson's novel revolves around Robert Neville, a scientist living in post-apocalyptic Manhattan, which is infested with vampiric monsters called Darkseekers.

Despite barely featuring for the first hour, the Darkseekers' presence can always be felt. Based on the way Neville speaks about them, the nocturnal humanoids come across as an unstoppable threat, and as Neville notices the Darkseekers have moved objects around the city to toy with his fragile mind, you realise they aren't mindless beasts but intelligent and tactical adversaries.

That's why it's such a shame when the Darkseekers are revealed to be shabby CGI creatures. Although bad CGI is a common problem in movies, this one really stung. Firstly, there's no reason why the Darkseekers couldn't be animatronics or actors in make-up. In fact, that was the original idea.

Considering how fantastic the initial visuals looked, it's hard to understand what possessed the filmmakers to swap it out for CGI.

Even though Will Smith is acting his ass off against the Darkseekers, their poor rendering and exaggerated facial expressions ruin the immersion.
