20 Horror Monsters That Were Scarier Before You Saw Them

5. Blake Lovell - Wolf Man

The special effects in An American Werewolf in Paris may have been awful, but at least the filmmakers tried to be ambitious. The same cannot be said about 2025's Wolf Man.

In this reboot, writer and family man Blake Lovell gets scratched by a werewolf, causing the curse to pass onto him. Within most versions of this type of story, the werewolf transformation occurs within a matter of seconds or minutes. But shortly after being infected, Blake only acquires mild animalistic traits, like jagged teeth and excessive hair.

Sure, Blake looks abnormal, but he doesn't resemble the classic Universal Monster. As such, it's safe to assume this is merely the first phase of the transformation, and we'll see our tragic hero go full werewolf later on.

However, Blake's final form is only slightly more monstrous, still leagues behind the traditional design. Out of context, viewers probably wouldn't know Blake is supposed to be a werewolf, and would instead mistake him for a vagrant in desperate need of a shave.

Considering the project spent an eternity in development, it's hard to believe this was the best design writer/director Leigh Whannell and his team could cook up.
