20 Horror Monsters That Were Scarier Before You Saw Them
18. Sil - Species
In Species, a team of scientists are tasked with taking down an alien/human hybrid called Sil, who's desperate to mate and reproduce.
What makes this sci-fi slasher aggravating is the fact that it was fine right until the third act. For the first hour or so, Sil is depicted as a beautiful young woman, with the camera cutting away just as we're about to bear witness to her extra-terrestrial body.
After being teased over and over, viewers should've been keen to see Sil's true form. Unfortunately, though, Sil's appearance at the end is disappointing since it's almost a carbon copy of the Xenomorph design from Alien. (Both creatures had the same designer, H.R. Giger.)
Although practical effects were used, Sil's final form is mostly brought to life with CGI. Even though computer-generated imagery had already done wonders in cinema by this point, this scene proves the tech was still in its infancy.
Due to the uncanny valley expressions and jarring movements, Sil doesn't just look bad but incomplete. The CGI here wasn't considered cutting-edge at the time, so you can imagine how artificial it appears when analysed with a modern lens.
