20 Horror Movie Characters Everyone Underestimated
9. Lionel Cosgrove & Paquita Sánchez - Braindead
In Peter Jackson's splatter classic Braindead, Lionel Cosgrove (Timothy Balme) is presented as basically the polar opposite of a hero - a shy and retiring mummy's boy who doesn't look like he'd be even remotely helpful in the middle of a zombie invasion.
To the same token, there's little to indicate that his love interest Paquita (Diana Peñalver) could bring much to the table to fend off the undead either.
But they both surprised just about everyone in Braindead's utterly insane finale.
When all hell breaks loose and his house is overrun with zombies, Lionel grabs a lawnmower and uses it to start chopping the horde to pieces, all while Paquita disposes of their body parts in a blender.
To see Lionel and Paquita at the end triumphantly covered in blood - that's one hell of a personal growth journey right there.
And in a film that quite literally features a priest with an unexpected penchant for kung-fu, this is still the most surprising character turn.
