You've seen the meme, now see the movie! Yes, as much as an internet meme might seem an unlikely source material for a full-length studio-produced motion picture, Hollywood will grab hold of ideas wherever they surface. So it is that the Slender Man will make his big screen bow in 2018.

Directed by Sylvain White (previously responsible for The Losers, Stomp The Yard and, er, I'll Always Know What You Did Last Summer), the movie will reportedly centre on a group of small town teens intrigued by the stories of the Slender Man. Setting out to debunk it as an urban legend, they soon learn the hard way that he's very real.

In the wake of its first trailer, the film has already attracted some controversy due to the meme allegedly inspiring the near-fatal stabbing of a Wisconsin schoolgirl. The victim's father has publicly spoken out against the film, some Wisconsin cinemas have already declared they will not show the film, and online petitions have been launched calling for its withdrawal.

All of which, we can say with some certainty, is only more likely to sell tickets.

Release: 18 May
