It's generally not smart to bet against the collective talents of Rooney Mara and Joaquin Phoenix, and having the pair team up for a biblical drama directed by Lion's Garth Davis seemed like a sure thing that couldn't miss.

Yet despite some praise for the performances, Mary Magdelene landed with a thud of indifference from critics, who criticised the languid pacing and generally interest-free narrative.

Honestly, critics probably went a little too easy on the movie if anything, which must surely be the year's most boring film starring two Oscar-nominated actors.

A catastrophic flame-out for a project many hoped might be one of 2018's first awards contenders.
