20 Movie Scenes That Are Totally Flawless

14. We'll Be Listening - The Conversation (1974)

The Boondock Saints Willem Dafoe
Paramount Pictures

Francis Ford Coppola's suspenseful drama The Conversation is based around a deadly misunderstanding. Veteran surveillance expert Harry Caul (Gene Hackman) is sure his employer (Robert Duvall) is going to kill his wife and her lover, so he keeps an eye on the situation only to learn it's the employer whose life is in danger.

At the end of the film, with his employer dead and his safety threatened, Caul receives a message from his late boss's assistant (Harrison Ford) warning him not to get involved in the situation any further. Caul is then left with a sinister threat: "We'll be listening."

Caul tears up his apartment looking for a bug, but comes up short, allowing the film to end with him playing his prized saxophone, surrounded by the wreckage of both his home and his solitary existence. As far as movie endings go, it's a spotless jaw-dropper.
