20 Movies Destroyed By Their Plot Holes

18. Gone Girl - The Idiotic Police Investigation

Gone Girl
20th Century Fox

Looking back on it over a decade later. Gone Girl is very silly indeed. A good watch, sure, but it should not be accused of being as clever as it so often has been. Gone Girl is one of those films that falls apart whenever you look closely at its plot, and after so much discussion and analysis over the years, its plot holes have only become harder to ignore with time.

Most notably, the investigating authorities are so damn incompetent. Had they investigated the clues properly, they would've known that Amy Dunne (Rosamund Pike) had faked her death and framed her husband, and they totally failed to check her subsequent cover story.

Later in the film, she goes to stay with Desi (Neil Patrick Harris), a creepy ex-boyfriend, and she eventually kills him and claims that he kidnapped her. But here's the thing: her mobile phone data would've told a different story, and there would've been CCTV showing her arriving as a guest.

For the record, these questionable plot points are present in the book, too, but they felt more forgivable there. In prose, writer Gillian Flynn was able to really explore the psychology of the two main characters in a gripping way. The film adaptation, on the other hand, leans more heavily on its twists, few of which feel entirely earned, least of all its famously downbeat ending.
