It's fair to say that Todd Phillips (Road Trip, The Hangover) is an incredibly inconsistent filmmaker, but when he lands an actor of Joaquin Phoenix's calibre, it's tough not to pay attention.

Joker may end up messy and rough around the edges as per most of Phillips' movies, but expect it to be buoyed at all times by a typically fearless and uncompromising Phoenix performance.

It won't eclipse the iconic appeal of Heath Ledger's portrayal, but hopefully serve as something refreshing and completely different from prior iterations of the Clown Prince of Crime.
