20 Surprisingly Great Horror Movie Remakes

1. The Thing

1951's The Thing from Another World is a classic sci-fi horror film, and so there was much consternation when a 1982 remake was released, that a generational horror masterpiece was about to get massacred by the guy who wrote two of The Bad News Bears movies and a rising genre filmmaker called John Carpenter.

But Carpenter's new take was mounted as a more faithful adaptation of the original novella Who Goes There?, and though poorly received on original release, The Thing became a bonafide genre classic in its own right over time.

Of course, the film's practical monster effects remain brilliantly nauseating to this very day, while Carpenter's direction is ferociously taut, the ensemble cast is perfect, and Ennio Morricone's dread-soaked musical score is an absolute banger.

The Thing is a dark, nihilistic product of its time just as the '51 film held up a mirror to postwar anxiety, and against the odds, it just might be the greatest horror remake ever produced.
