James Cameron always seemed destined to return to the Terminator films, but it's forever been a struggle. The director was frustrated at delays in production of the original movie, filling his suddenly spare time with writing work a project that evolved into Aliens, his second directorial effort. After that he did The Abyss, because the Terminator rights got so complicated. It was only thanks to Arnold Schwarzenegger convincing his Total Recall producers to buy the rest of those rights that Cameron got to direct T-2, but he didn't forget what he'd been working on in the meantime. So, as a reference to The Abyss, that gas station Sarah Connor stops at bears the logo of the petroleum company behind the plot of that film. Not only that, but that reference to Benthic Petroleum was featured in all three of the first Terminator films: the gas station also appears in first movie and Terminator 3: Rise Of The Machines. Even when Cameron isn't actually directly working on them, there's always something of him in Terminator.
