11. Kevin Costner Audition For The Role Of H.I. Three Times

With H.I. being such a demanding character in terms of comedic timing and energy, it's not surprising that the casting process would be rigorous to find the right person.

Costner was an early favourite of the directors too, and it's unknown what specifically made them change their minds and pick Cage instead. Having auditioned three times, it must have been one hell of an audition from Cage to snag it out from under him.

Richard Jenkins also unsuccessfully auditioned for the role of H.I., and would go on to audition for Miller's Crossing and Fargo too without anything coming to fruition before finally landing a role in their 2001 film The Man Who Wasn't There.
